Self-fertility — Asian Pear

Pyrus pyrifolia (Burm. f.) Nakai

Asian pear possesses genetically determined gametophytic self-incompatibility controlled by the S-locus, which makes the majority of cultivars dependent on cross-pollination.

In the reference 10 varieties crop Japanese pear, where this is mentioned in the description.

The species Pyrus pyrifolia is characterized by the S-RNase system, which blocks pollen tube growth when the S-alleles of the maternal plant and the pollen match. Most existing cultivars are self-incompatible; however, through breeding and mutation, rare self-compatible forms such as the Osa-Nijisseiki cultivar have been obtained.

The self-fertility of the crop is evaluated by the percentage of fruit set under artificial isolation of inflorescences. Cultivars with a set rate of at least 20% are classified as self-fertile, those from 10% to 20% as partially self-fertile, and those with less than 5% of the total pollinated flowers as self-incompatible.

Pronounced self-incompatibility dictates the need to select mutually compatible pollinator cultivars that bloom simultaneously and arrange them in the orchard to ensure stable yields. Even for self-fertile varieties, cross-pollination is often recommended as a method to increase fruit quality and volume.
