The suitability of poplar is determined by its physical and mechanical properties: a density of approximately 450 kg/m³, straight grain, and lack of odor. Fast-growing clones allow for the efficient use of the wood in the plywood, pulp and paper, and energy industries.

Poplar wood is characterized by its lightness, uniformity, and ease of mechanical processing, including planing and peeling. Its neutral color and lack of odor make the material sought after for the production of packaging for food and medical goods, as well as in match manufacturing. Its responsiveness to gluing allows poplar to be used as a primary raw material for creating plywood and particle boards.
On an industrial scale, fast-growing hybrids and clones, cultivated using short-rotation coppice technology, are used for the production of biofuels, pellets, and bioethanol. The suitability of the wood depends on the genetic characteristics of the clone, including the lignin-to-cellulose ratio, which is critical for the pulp and paper industry and enzymatic hydrolysis.
The technological parameters of the raw material depend on plantation cultivation conditions, which ensure the standardization of characteristics. At the same time, processing requires consideration of the material's tendency to warp during drying and its susceptibility to rot in the butt log, which limits the rotation age and dictates harvesting conditions.
