Diseases
Populus L.
A group of fungal diseases of poplar, primarily consisting of Marssonina leaf spot and Septoria leaf spot. Pathogens cause leaf necrosis, premature defoliation, and necrotic cankers on shoots.
In the reference 4 varieties crop Poplar, where this is mentioned in the description.
The main causal agents of Marssonina leaf spot include fungi of the genus Drepanopeziza, such as Marssonina populi, M. brunnea, and M. castagnei. The disease appears in late spring with the development of brown spots, on which conidial acervuli are formed. The infection spreads from the lower branches upward, triggering premature leaf fall. Specialized MO and MU forms, which differ in their pathogenicity mechanisms, have been described for M. brunnea.
Septoria leaf spot is caused by the species Sphaerulina musiva and S. populicola. The disease is characterized by the appearance of spots with black pycnidia; infection by Sphaerulina musiva leads to dangerous necrotic stem cankers capable of causing girdling and shoot dieback. Resistance to these pathogens is a quantitative trait associated with the expression of defense enzymes and is most often assessed through the phenotypic manifestation of damage in clones or via quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping.
