Poplar Tolerance

Poplar tolerance refers to the ability of a genotype to maintain viability and productivity under exposure to abiotic stressors such as salinity, low temperatures, and technogenic pollution.

The assessment of poplar tolerance is based on laboratory modeling and field phytomonitoring. Under in vitro conditions, ion homeostasis of K+/Na+ and chloride accumulation are studied in the presence of salinity, while cold stress is evaluated by measuring the regrowth intensity of cuttings following freezing. At the molecular-genetic level, tolerance is determined by the expression of specific genes, such as DREB2, which regulate the response to extreme conditions.

In field conditions, poplar resistance is evaluated via the relative vitality status of stands, as well as morphometric indicators and wood radial growth dynamics under technogenic pressure. High tolerance, characteristic of Populus euphratica, for example, allows for the use of clones in reclamation, phytoremediation, and the establishment of protective forest belts.
