Poplar productivity

Populus L.

Poplar productivity is determined by the rate of biomass accumulation and timber volume, making this crop one of the fastest-growing species in the temperate zone.

In the reference 27 varieties crop Poplar, where this is mentioned in the description.

Poplar productivity is measured through stand inventory metrics, such as height, stem diameter, and total standing volume, or through fresh and dry biomass weight for energy plantations. The primary units of measurement are cubic meters per hectare per year for timber and tonnes per hectare for biomass.

Productivity indicators depend on age, growing conditions, and breeding material. Under optimal conditions for Populus alba, the average wood increment reaches 20–30 m³/ha per year, whereas in intensive plantations of triploid hybrid cultivars, the increment is 10–20 m³/ha per year at a young age.

The productivity trait determines the economic efficiency of afforestation and allows for shortening the rotation period to 6–7 years in energy plantations. Poplar breeding is aimed at selecting forms with the maximum reaction norm to environmental conditions to ensure a stable yield of commercial timber or raw material for the pulp and paper industry.
