Poplar Cuttings Propagation

The primary method of vegetative propagation for the genus Populus, allowing for the preservation of varietal traits and the plant's sex. The success of the process depends on the species' genetic predisposition to form root primordia and the type of cutting used.

Hardwood, softwood, and root cuttings are used for propagation. Winter cuttings with a diameter of at least 1 cm are used for species of the section Aigeiros, which root well, unlike the difficult-to-root aspen or white poplar. Softwood cuttings with 3 leaves under greenhouse conditions with misting systems show rooting rates of up to 100%, while root cuttings 5–10 cm long are suitable for species prone to forming suckers, such as the white poplar.

The ability for rhizogenesis is genetically determined: species with preformed root primordia on their stems, such as the balsam poplar, root faster than species without them. When using shoots from old trees, the topophysis effect may occur, in which the young plant retains the crown shape of the mature tree. For economically valuable hybrids with a low rooting capacity, grafting or clonal micropropagation methods are employed.
