Tomato rootstock

Solanum lycopersicum L.

Tomato rootstock is an F1 hybrid-based root module that provides scion resistance to soil-borne pathogens and stress factors, while also regulating the vegetative-generative balance of the plant.

In the reference 129 varieties crop Tomato, where this is mentioned in the description.

The primary purpose of tomato rootstock is adaptation to soil conditions and stresses, such as high salinity, temperature fluctuations, moisture deficit, and pathogen infestation, including Fusarium, nematodes, and the ToBRFV virus. Rootstocks are selectively bred from wild tomato relatives to develop a vigorous root system capable of sustaining high productivity over long production cycles in greenhouses.

Selecting a rootstock allows for the management of scion development: vegetative rootstocks enhance the growth of the aerial part to support the yield of vigorous hybrids, while generative rootstocks promote early fruiting. Unlike perennial crops, tomato rootstocks are always F1 seed hybrids, and grafting technology requires high precision when joining herbaceous stems at the seedling stage.
