Pepper lodging

In peppers, lodging leads to direct contact between fruit and soil, which triggers decay and disease infection, and also hinders agrotechnical care and harvesting. Damage to the root system or stem fractures associated with this phenomenon restrict fruit nutrition and reduce overall plant productivity.

Resistance assessment is based on visual determination of the lodging pattern, the degree of plant inclination, and the ability of the plants to restore their vertical position during the growing season. Breeding programs often use a binary scoring scale, while scientific studies additionally record the dynamics of the number of lodged plants and measure the stem diameter at the base.

To increase lodging resistance, hilling is used to stimulate the development of adventitious roots, as well as the installation of individual supports with tying at early growth stages. The intensity of the trait expression is evaluated by comparing the cultivar sample with an accepted standard under specific cultivation conditions.
