To assess the lodging resistance of rye, a five-point scale is used, where 1–2 points correspond to severe tilting or lodging of stems, and 4–5 points correspond to an upright position. In breeding, instrumental methods for straw morphology analysis are employed, including measuring the weight, length, and wall thickness of the second lower internodes, as well as testing stem breaking strength.
The negative consequences of lodging include a reduction in 1000-kernel weight, poor grain filling, and the development of fungal diseases due to changes in the canopy microclimate. Genetic breeding of rye focuses on developing semi-dwarf varieties with a height of 120–150 cm, as excessive use of nitrogen fertilizers promotes overgrowth of vegetative mass and increases the risk of lodging.
