The loss of vertical orientation of sorghum stalks, which hinders mechanized harvesting and reduces yield. Resistance to this trait is a breeding characteristic depending on stalk tissue strength and plant height.

The risk of losing the vertical position of the stalk increases significantly when the crop is left standing past maturity; therefore, breeding for dwarfism and tissue strength is a key method for ensuring harvest efficiency.
