Maize Lodging

Zea mays L. subsp. mays (Maize Group)

The disruption of the vertical position of the maize stem, caused by root or stalk breakage, which leads to yield losses and hinders mechanized harvesting.

In the reference 963 varieties crop Maize, where this is mentioned in the description.

Maize lodging is divided into stalk lodging, characterized by mechanical breakage of the stem at the node level, and root lodging, where the plant leans or falls over along with its root system. To evaluate the resistance of hybrids, a five-point visual scale is used, as well as quantitative counting as a percentage of plants per plot or a method of measuring the stem deviation from the vertical at 30–45 degrees.

This trait directly affects productivity: lodged plants have poorer grain filling, which reduces grain quality, while contact with the soil and increased moisture promote the development of rots and the accumulation of mycotoxins. The risk of lodging increases with high plant density, unbalanced nutrition with an excess of nitrogen, as well as due to the genetic characteristics of the hybrid and damage to the root system by pests or infections.
