Tomato Grafting

Solanum lycopersicum L.

Tomato grafting is a method of joining a scion to a vigorous rootstock to increase resistance to soil-borne pathogens and stress conditions. In commercial vegetable production, the procedure is carried out at the seedling stage to ensure vigorous growth and productivity in long-cycle rotations.

In the reference 137 varieties crop Tomato, where this is mentioned in the description.

Tomato grafting technology aims to overcome susceptibility to Fusarium wilt, Verticillium wilt, corky root rot, and root-knot nematodes. The use of specialized hybrid rootstocks allows for the development of a powerful root system that provides nutrition for plants bearing up to 30 trusses, and also enhances adaptability to soil salinity and moisture deficit.

Operations are performed at the 1–2 true leaf stage with stem diameters of approximately 1.6–1.8 mm using approach grafting or cleft grafting methods. Silicone clips are used for fixation, after which the plants are placed in chambers with 95–98% humidity and a temperature of 23–25 °C for tissue union, which takes 6–8 days.
