Rice Productivity

A complex indicator of plant and crop potential, determined by morphological traits of the panicle, grain biomass, and stand density. It includes the specialized OMS index and the harvest index, the optimal level of which for modern varieties reaches 50%.

At the individual plant level, rice productivity is assessed by grain weight per plant and per main panicle, productive tillering, and grain number. An important indicator is the OMS index, calculated as the ratio of the flag and sub-flag leaf area to the grain weight per panicle, where a lower value indicates more efficient photosynthetic apparatus performance. The harvest index (HI), reflecting the proportion of grain in the total biomass, reaches 50% in modern varieties.

When assessing crops, indicators of yield (t/ha or c/ha) and agro-ecological productivity (kg/day/ha) are used. To achieve high yields of up to 8.0 t/ha, optimal plants are considered to be 90–95 cm tall with a panicle length of 16–17 cm, a 1000-grain weight of 32–36 g, and a productive stand density of 300–350 units/m².

Rice productivity is closely linked to agronomic factors and variety characteristics. A negative correlation is observed between earliness and yield, while short-stemmed varieties demonstrate increased resistance to lodging. Low 1000-grain weight negatively affects processing quality, increasing the percentage of broken kernels during milling, whereas external factors, such as phosphorus deficiency or blast disease, lead to empty grains and a decrease in total grain yield.
