Variety traits
Trifolium pratense L.
A complex indicator including forage yield of dry matter and green mass, as well as seed productivity. It depends on cultivar ploidy, pollination conditions, moisture availability, and boron supply.
In the reference 121 varieties crop Red clover, where this is mentioned in the description.
The forage productivity of red clover is expressed in terms of dry matter yield (from 5 to 14 t/ha) and is assessed based on digestible protein content and metabolizable energy. Seed productivity is highly dependent on weather conditions and pollination factors, varying from 70–100 kg/ha in unfavorable years to 400–600 kg/ha for diploid cultivars in favorable periods.
Tetraploid cultivars outperform diploid ones in green and dry mass yield, as well as protein content, by 15–19%. The realization of productivity is limited by a 2–3 year economic lifespan and restricted by the availability of phosphorus-potassium nutrition and boron, to which the crop is highly sensitive.
The choice of yield potential is determined by the cultivar type: early-maturing double-cut forms are adapted to different conditions than late-maturing single-cut ones. To maintain varietal purity and productivity of tetraploid cultivars, a spatial isolation of at least 200 meters from diploid crops is required.
