Triticale leaf spots

A group of fungal diseases caused primarily by tan spot and septoria. They manifest as necrotic spots with chlorotic halos, while the crop's genetic resistance is insufficiently studied and relies on the inheritance of traits from parental forms.

The main causal agents of triticale leaf spots are Pyrenophora tritici-repentis, which causes tan spot, and a complex of pathogens responsible for septoria, including Septoria secalis, Parastagonospora nodorum, and Zymoseptoria tritici. The symptoms of tan spot are characterized by oval lesions with a dark center and a yellow halo, whereas septoria often manifests as vein-limited rectangular spots with black pycnidia in the center.

The specific genetic basis for triticale resistance to these pathogens is poorly defined. Breeding programs often account for toxin sensitivity, such as the presence of the Tsn1 gene, which determines susceptibility to the ToxA toxin in tan spot. Since specialized resistance genes for triticale have not been systematically classified, it is recommended to use field resistance scales, such as Sarry & Prescott, to evaluate varieties.
