White Rust of Horseradish

Armoracia rusticana P. Gaertn. et al.

A fungal disease caused by the oomycete Albugo candida, manifesting as the formation of white pustules on the underside of horseradish leaves and leading to the deformation of plant organs.

The causative agent of the disease is Albugo candida (Cystopus candidus), which forms characteristic white, convex pustules containing a mass of sporangia on the underside of leaves. Chlorotic spots form on the upper side of the leaf at the sites of infection.

Systemic infection leads to leaf curling and the formation of swellings on stems, petioles, and rhizomes, which can cause yield losses of up to 50%. Regarding Armoracia rusticana, race 3 of the pathogen Albugo candida has been specifically identified, showing high specialization to this host.

No generally accepted resistance genes to the pathogen in Armoracia rusticana have been identified to date. Breeding efforts rely on the selection of relatively resistant clones and the study of the potential for complete resistance observed in the related species Armoracia macrocarpa.
