Diseases
Avena sativa L.
The most dangerous fungal disease of oats, caused by the basidiomycete fungus Puccinia coronata f. sp. avenae. It is characterized by the appearance of orange uredinia on the leaves and the formation of characteristic teliospores with crown-like appendages.
In the reference 182 varieties crop Oat, where this is mentioned in the description.
The pathogen is a heteroecious fungus that completes its spermogonial and aecial stages on species of buckthorn (Rhamnus), while the uredinial and telial stages occur on oats. High genetic variability of the pathogen, which includes about 150 races, allows it to rapidly overcome varietal resistance.
Symptoms appear during the heading or grain-filling phase as large, round, orange pustules on the upper side of leaf blades. By the end of the growing season, shiny black telia cushions form on the underside of the leaves, containing teliospores with outgrowths resembling a crown.
In oat breeding for resistance, both race-specific Pc-genes (such as Pc39, Pc68, Pc91, Pc94), which are monitored by molecular markers, and non-specific resistance determined by quantitative trait loci are used. The severity of infection in varieties is traditionally assessed using scoring scales.
