A fungal disease of faba bean caused by the obligate parasite Uromyces viciae-fabae. It manifests as an infection of all above-ground plant organs, leading to leaf drop and significant yield losses.

The causative agent of the disease is the autoecious basidiomycete fungus Uromyces viciae-fabae. The pathogen affects leaves, stems, and pods, passing through the stages of light-colored aecia formation, light-brown powdery uredinia, and dark-brown telia. Mass development of the uredinial stage destroys the epidermis, causing premature senescence of the leaf canopy and the formation of underdeveloped seeds, which reduces yields by 15–30%.

Genetic resistance to rust is represented by the monogenic markers Uvf-1, Uvf-2, and Uvf-3, as well as polygenic non-specific 'slow-rusting' type resistance. Despite the presence of physiological races of the fungus, breeding often relies on gene pyramiding and the evaluation of genotype responses to local pathogen isolates due to the complex inheritance pattern of the trait.
