Self-fertility in Maize

Zea mays L.

Maize is an obligate cross-pollinating plant; therefore, the concept of self-fertility is not applied to it as an agronomic trait. In breeding, the synchronization of tassel and silk flowering, as well as the ability of hybrids to set seeds under environmental conditions, are of key importance.

Maize is a monoecious cross-pollinated plant in which natural self-pollination is limited and accounts for about 5%. The most important fertilization factors for this crop are the synchrony of male and female inflorescence flowering and the absence of asynchrony. Instead of a self-fertility index, agronomists evaluate the anthesis-silking interval and the overall kernel set quality of the ear, which directly depend on the genotype's resistance to environmental stress factors affecting pollen tube growth.
