The disease is caused by the fungus Botrytis cinerea Pers., which exhibits high genetic variability. Unlike some other pathogens, no specific races or pathotypes strictly associated with chrysanthemum are identified for it; instead, species adaptability is manifested through differences in isolate virulence.

Symptoms of floral infection begin with the appearance of small, translucent spots on the petals, which rapidly enlarge under high humidity, leading to bud rot and petal drop. Water-soaked, brown-toned spots appear on leaves and stems; stem infection can cause girdling and subsequent death of the upper part of the plant.

Diagnosis of the disease is based on the detection of characteristic grey or grey-brown sporulating mold on the tissues. Specific resistance genes in chrysanthemum have not been identified, so research focuses on studying quantitative polygenic resistance and plant metabolic defense responses.
