The disease is caused by the necrotrophic pathogen Botrytis cinerea, the development of which is triggered by high atmospheric humidity exceeding 95% and the presence of condensate on tissue surfaces at temperatures ranging from 18 to 25°C. The primary symptom is the appearance of a characteristic fuzzy coating on plant organs, with flower petals remaining the most susceptible to infection.

Petchoa possesses natural resistance to gray mold due to interspecific hybridization, which makes it a more reliable crop compared to its parent species. Although specific resistance genes or specialized pathogen races for Petchoa have not been identified, a violation of agrotechnical conditions, such as poor air circulation, can lead to infection even in these relatively resistant plants.
