A complex of pathogens causing damage to the root system of the hybrid. It is characterized by increased resistance to late blight compared to the parent forms due to the accumulation of phenolic compounds in the roots.

The main causal agents of root and stem rots in petchoa are the oomycetes Pythium spp. and Phytophthora parasitica, as well as the fungus Rhizoctonia solani. The disease develops most intensely when agricultural practices are violated, in particular, during overwatering of the substrate and poor aeration.
The hybrid possesses increased natural resistance to Phytophthora parasitica, with incidence rates in petchoa being 42–68% lower than in the parent species of petunia and calibrachoa. This mechanism is driven by the intensive synthesis of phenolic compounds in root tissues, which create a biochemical barrier to infection penetration.
