Gray mold of pea

Pisum sativum L.

A fungal disease of pea caused by the necrotroph Botrytis cinerea, affecting all aerial plant organs. It is characterized by the appearance of necrotic spots and a gray fuzzy mold under high humidity conditions.

In the reference 9 varieties crop Pea, where this is mentioned in the description.

The pathogen causing the disease is the fungus Botrytis cinerea, which is capable of infecting stems, leaves, flowers, and pods of peas. Initial signs of infection often appear on the lower leaves as watery brown or grayish-brown spots, which become covered with a characteristic mold of conidiophores and conidia when air humidity exceeds 95%.

In the affected areas, tissues soften and rot, leading to the death of individual parts or the entire plant, while dense black sclerotia form on the damaged areas to ensure pathogen survival. Infection often begins on senescing tissues, such as moist petals adhering to stems or pods. Currently, there are no resistant pea cultivars, and specific resistance genes have not been identified.
