The use of winter rye as a green manure is based on its high frost resistance, ability to suppress weeds through allelopathic substances, and active soil loosening by a powerful root system.

When using rye, it is important to consider the risk of a negative allelopathic effect on subsequent crops, which requires a 2–3 week interval before main sowing. Also, rye can actively absorb soil moisture, creating a deficit for subsequent plants, and contribute to wireworm accumulation, which is why it is not recommended as a predecessor for corn and other cereals.
