The vigor of the Japanese plum is a key trait evaluated through linear crown parameters, shoot formation intensity, and annual growth for designing planting schemes.

To assess the vigor of the Japanese plum, the linear parameters of a mature tree and the intensity of annual growth are used. Growth of less than 15 cm is classified as weak development, whereas rates of 35–40 cm and above indicate good vigor. Varieties are divided into groups based on their vigor relative to control samples, which is critical when selecting rootstocks and establishing high-density orchards.

This trait directly determines cultivation technology and tree spacing. Varieties with high vegetative growth intensity require larger distances between rows and specific pruning aimed at controlling vertical growth, as excessive growth often reduces crop productivity.
