Variety traits
Prunus salicina Lindl.
The bloom (epicuticular wax) is an important biological characteristic of Japanese plum fruits, determining their physiological shelf life, resistance to moisture evaporation, and commercial appearance.
In the reference 28 varieties crop Japanese plum, where this is mentioned in the description.
During variety testing of Japanese plums, the intensity of the bloom is evaluated by an expert using a visual-descriptive method on a scale from weak to strong. A weak degree of expression gives the skin a glossy appearance, whereas a strong bloom creates a distinct matte finish, most noticeable on dark-colored fruits.
The bloom performs protective functions, reducing the rate of moisture loss and shielding the skin from mechanical damage and overheating due to sunlight. The presence of a pronounced bloom contributes to better preservation of the fruits during transport; however, it is important to distinguish it from the bloom caused by fungal diseases.
