Suitability for cut flowers — Anthurium andreanum

Anthurium-Andreanum-Hybriden

A characteristic of the commercial value of the crop, determined by the high vase life of the inflorescences and specific requirements for temperature regime and substrate aeration.

In the reference 47 varieties crop Anthurium, where this is mentioned in the description.

Anthurium andreanum is characterized by a high vase life, allowing the inflorescences to maintain their decorative quality for 2 to 3 weeks. The physiology of plant senescence is linked to the process of spadix necrosis and the ability of the spathe to retain color, with the density of stomata on the abaxial side of the leaf serving as one of the morphophysiological markers of cut flower longevity.

Production technology requires the exclusion of temperatures below +15°C, which provoke spathe discoloration, and careful handling to prevent mechanical damage leading to tissue blackening. For commercial cultivation, highly aerated substrates are used, ensuring efficient root system functioning throughout the 6–7 years of plant exploitation.

When selecting varieties for cut flowers, agronomists consider not only the shape and color of the spathe but also quantitative indicators of peduncle yield and length. Unlike potted forms, cut flower production is focused on creating specific nutritional conditions and the application of hormonal regulators to delay spadix senescence.
