Suitability of carnations for cutting

The suitability of carnations for cutting is determined by the conformity of morphological traits to varietal standards and the application of specific agrotechnical practices to form marketability and shelf life.

When evaluating carnations for cutting suitability according to UPOV and CPVO protocols, the key morphological parameters are stem strength and height, as well as the characteristics of the fifth internode below the flower. For inflorescences, diameter, doubleness, bud opening stage, and petal margin shape are taken into account.

Technological suitability is achieved by pinching shoots above the 5th–6th node to stimulate branching, disbudding for large-flowered varieties, and the mandatory installation of support netting. Post-harvest qualities depend on maintaining the temperature regime during cultivation and transport within the range of 2–5°C.
