Gerbera jamesonii Bolus ex Hook. f.
A complex quality indicator determined by the genetic resistance of the flower stalk to bending and the resistance to microbiological vascular occlusion of the stem.

The main criterion for the suitability of Gerbera for cut flowers is resistance to 'bent neck', a physiological phenomenon characterized by turgor loss in the flower stalk area immediately below the inflorescence. Unlike many ornamental crops, Gerbera must be harvested only after the inflorescence has fully opened, as premature harvesting does not ensure proper quality and size of the flower head.
The harvesting technology for Gerbera involves pulling the flower stalk from the basal rosette, which reduces the risk of stem damage and pathogen transmission. During post-harvest handling, controlling the water balance and preventing stem rot, caused by the plant's high susceptibility to fungal diseases, is of critical importance. Successful breeding for cut flower suitability aims to increase flower stalk rigidity and improve the overall phytosanitary resistance of the variety.
