Pea Sowing Time

Pisum sativum L.

Peas are a cold-resistant, early-sown crop that requires minimum soil temperatures for germination and maximum utilization of spring moisture.

In the reference 13 varieties crop Pea, where this is mentioned in the description.

Peas are sown early when soil temperatures are between +1 and +5 °C, as the crop is capable of withstanding frosts down to –8 °C. Early sowing allows plants to utilize winter-spring moisture reserves, which is critical for seed swelling, as seeds require up to 115% of their own weight in water.

Late sowing leads to the shifting of flowering and grain filling to a period of high temperatures and dry winds, which causes a reduction in yield and pod coarsening. Special attention should be paid to minimizing the interval between soil tillage and sowing to conserve soil moisture.

Modern wrinkled pea varieties may possess increased sensitivity to frost during the seedling emergence phase. In southern regions, the cultivation of overwintering pea forms sown in the autumn is also practiced, which allows for efficient use of moisture supply and avoids summer overheating of the plants.
