Cytoplasmic Male Sterility (CMS) in Cauliflower

Brassica oleracea L. (Cauliflower Group)

CMS in cauliflower is a maternally inherited trait characterized by the inability to produce viable pollen while maintaining female fertility, used for the production of F1 hybrids.

In the reference 8 varieties crop Cauliflower, where this is mentioned in the description.

The primary type of CMS used in cauliflower breeding is the Ogura type, derived from Japanese radish. In this case, sterility is caused by the interaction of the mitochondrial gene orf138 with nuclear fertility restorer Rf genes.

The trait is evaluated phenotypically by analyzing the state of the androecium under field conditions or via molecular genetic PCR testing for the presence of specific primers for the orf138, orf222, and orf224 genes. The use of CMS eliminates the need for manual emasculation of flowers during hybridization.
