Pests
Brassica napus var. napus
The main pest of rapeseed is the cabbage aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae), which damages plants by sucking sap, causing leaf curling and flower abortion.
In the reference 7 varieties crop Rapeseed, where this is mentioned in the description.
The cabbage aphid is a sap-sucking insect whose infestation on rapeseed manifests as discoloration and deformation of the foliage, stunted growth, and flower drop. While feeding, aphids excrete honeydew, which promotes the growth of saprophytic fungi and sooty mold, and they also act as vectors for dangerous viral diseases.
The period of greatest economic damage depends on the crop type: for winter rapeseed, the critical period is the pod-filling stage, whereas for spring rapeseed, it is the budding and flowering stages. No direct genetic resistance of rapeseed to the pest itself has been identified; however, breeding is focused on resistance to the Turnip yellows virus (TuYV) transmitted by the aphid.
