Aphid infestation of Canadian poplar

Populus x canadensis Moench

Infestation of Canadian poplar by aphids involves colonization of the bark by the poplar woolly aphid (*Phloeomyzus passerinii*), which causes necrosis, and the formation of galls on leaf petioles by species of the genera *Pemphigus* and *Thecabius*.

In the reference 8 varieties crop Carolina poplar, where this is mentioned in the description.

The most dangerous pest is the poplar woolly aphid, which attacks the bark of trunks and the base of branches. Its feeding induces cortical necrosis, which, at high population densities, can lead to the death of the tree. Meanwhile, gall-forming species inhabiting petioles and leaves generally do not cause significant damage to the viability of the poplar.

Resistance to the poplar woolly aphid depends on the clonal characteristics of the tree. Susceptible clones, such as 'I-214', provide favorable conditions for the pest's reproduction. Resistant forms, for example 'Brenta', exhibit antixenosis and antibiosis mechanisms, while clones with intermediate resistance, such as 'I45/51', only partially limit the fecundity of the aphid.
