In pepper, tolerance to biotic stresses is assessed visually under disease pressure using 4- or 5-point scales, where low scores correspond to an absence of symptoms. To quantify viral load in breeding practice, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is additionally employed.
Regarding abiotic factors, tolerance is determined by calculating heat and drought sensitivity indices, as well as physiological parameters, including membrane thermostability, photosynthetic pigment content, and enzyme activity, which allows for the identification of genotypes with minimal productivity loss under unfavorable conditions.
