Marketability of carrots

A complex indicator of the suitability of a carrot crop for sale, expressed as the percentage ratio of the mass of standard root vegetables to the total mass of the harvested crop.

Carrot marketability is determined based on the results of sorting after cleaning the root vegetables of tops and soil. The non-marketable portion (waste) includes root vegetables that do not meet standards regarding size, shape, presence of cracks, forking, diseases, or defects such as "green shoulders."

Marketability values depend on the variety and growing conditions. Modern hybrids demonstrate levels of 90–97%, while values of 72–85% are characteristic of more challenging growing conditions. Values below 60% indicate ineffective variety selection or critical damage to the crops.

The marketability trait is key to production economics and breeding, as it determines the net profit per hectare. Selection based on this indicator also contributes to improving the storage life of root vegetables and their suitability for mechanized harvesting due to uniformity and typicality of shape.
