Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench
An integral indicator of sorghum productivity, measured in tonnes per hectare for grain or green mass. It depends on the biological components of panicle and stem productivity, as well as the variety's adaptability to agrotechnical and climatic conditions.
In the reference 134 varieties crop Sorghum, where this is mentioned in the description.
Harvesting of grain sorghum is conducted at the full grain maturity stage, whereas sweet sorghum for silage is primarily harvested at the milk-waxy stage. Grain sorghum yield under production conditions ranges from 4.0–5.3 t/ha to 7 t/ha under irrigation, although in unfavorable conditions, figures can drop to 1.3–2.0 t/ha. The green mass of sweet sorghum averages 40–70 t/ha, reaching peak values of 100 t/ha.
Quantitative yield indicators for grain sorghum are determined by the 1000-grain weight, the number of grains per panicle, and the grain weight per panicle. For sweet sorghum, productivity is limited by plant height, tillering, leafiness, and stem juiciness. Realization of the variety's biological potential requires the selection of an optimal sowing density, ranging from 200 to 500 thousand viable seeds per hectare, as well as ensuring sufficient nitrogen nutrition and moisture availability.
