Herbicide Resistance in Wintercress

Brassica rapa L. subsp. campestris (L.) A. R. Clapham

Wintercress resistance is assessed using the RI index (the ratio of the GR₅₀ of the resistant biotype to the susceptible one), which reflects the dose required to inhibit growth by 50%. Index values vary significantly depending on the herbicide's mode of action.

In the reference 5 varieties crop Field mustard, where this is mentioned in the description.

To assess the level of wintercress resistance, dose-response tests are employed, where the primary metric is GR₅₀, characterizing the herbicide dose that reduces biomass or survival by 50%. The Resistance Index (RI) is calculated as the ratio of the GR₅₀ of the resistant biotype to the susceptible control.

Resistance levels depend on the group of active ingredients: for ALS (acetolactate synthase inhibitor) herbicides, the index can reach extreme values ranging from 947 to 4069, whereas for auxin-like compounds, the figures are significantly lower, ranging from 1.5 to 9.4.

For technological purposes, breeding-derived resistance is used to remove susceptible parent lines in hybrid seed production. At the same time, the uncontrolled appearance of resistant weed biotypes of wintercress and the risk of gene introgression from transgenic crops pose a serious challenge for crop rotations.
