Brassica rapa L. subsp. campestris (L.) A. R. Clapham
Winter cress is valued in forage production for the high nutritional value of its green mass and seeds, its early maturity, and its ability to replace expensive protein components in animal diets.
In the reference 17 varieties crop Field mustard, where this is mentioned in the description.
The green mass of winter cress, harvested at the budding stage, provides a metabolizable energy content of up to 10.51 MJ and crude protein of up to 18% in dry matter. Winter forms of the crop, due to the low position of the growing point (about 0.5 cm), possess high winter hardiness, making them an important element of the early forage supply chain.
Processed seed products from modern '000' type varieties, free from excess erucic acid and glucosinolates, are used in compound feeds for poultry and cattle as a substitute for soybean meal. Agrotechnically, winter cress surpasses oilseed rape in ripening speed, pod shatter resistance, and ripening uniformity, which minimizes losses during mechanized harvesting.
