Turnip Rape Plant Height

Brassica rapa L. subsp. campestris (L.) A. R. Clapham

Plant height is an important morphological trait of turnip rape that determines lodging resistance, suitability for mechanical harvesting, and variety productivity.

In the reference 16 varieties crop Field mustard, where this is mentioned in the description.

Turnip rape height values depend on the crop form: winter varieties reach 100–170 cm, while spring forms vary in the range of 80–140 cm. During variety testing, plants are classified into short, medium, and tall-stemmed groups, with the indicator measured in centimeters.

This trait directly affects agrotechnics: tall-stemmed varieties are more prone to lodging, which complicates harvesting. At the same time, sufficient stem height provides the crop with high competitiveness against weeds due to the rapid formation of a dense canopy.

Seed yield has a correlation with stem development, and when grown for green manure, plant height, in combination with the development stage, serves as a key indicator for determining the timing of mowing.
