Safflower growing season

Carthamus tinctorius L.

The duration of the period from full emergence to harvest maturity of safflower, which typically ranges from 100 to 130 days depending on the variety and growing conditions.

In the reference 5 varieties crop Safflower, where this is mentioned in the description.

The safflower growing season covers the time from the appearance of full emergence to the onset of full harvest maturity. During the ontogenesis of the crop, embryonic, pre-generative, and generative stages are distinguished. The duration of the cycle is highly plastic and depends on geographical conditions, temperature regime, photoperiod length, and the chosen sowing dates.

Under typical conditions, the crop's vegetation takes 100–130 days, although depending on the region, values vary from 81 to 239 days. With winter sowing, the duration of the period increases significantly, reaching 175–185 days. A shortening of the growing season caused by late sowing often leads to a decrease in yield due to plants being exposed to heat and moisture deficit.

Selecting a variety with an appropriate growing season allows for minimizing harvesting risks by scheduling it for July–August before the onset of autumn precipitation. Early sowings with more prolonged development at moderate temperatures provide safflower with a growth advantage over weeds, which significantly reduces weed infestation in the crops.
