The duration of the sunflower growing season covers the period from full emergence to the stage of physiological maturity, determined by the darkening of seeds, the drying of heads, and a seed moisture content of 10–15%. Plant development is assessed by interphase periods in accordance with the international BBCH scale.
The crop is divided into maturity groups ranging from ultra-early (80–90 days) to mid-late (116–135 days or more). The biological requirement for the sum of active temperatures above +10°C correlates with the duration of the period: early-maturing varieties require about 2000°C, while mid-maturing varieties require about 2150°C.
The length of the growing season directly affects yield: varieties with a longer formation period are potentially more productive but require a greater amount of heat. Proper selection of a maturity group allows agronomists to optimize crop rotation and avoid the impact of drought or frost.
