The primary causal agent of Verticillium wilt in Alstroemeria is the fungus Verticillium dahliae. The pathogen enters through the root system and colonizes the xylem, which manifests externally as chlorosis, leaf necrosis, and gradual wilting of the entire plant.

A characteristic diagnostic feature of the disease, observed upon longitudinal sectioning of the stem, is the browning or dark discoloration of the vascular bundles. Due to the similarity in symptoms with other tracheomycoses, such as Fusarium wilt, laboratory testing is required for an accurate diagnosis.
