Verticillium wilt of Rhododendron

Rhododendron L.

Large-leaved Rhododendron species possess high natural resistance to Verticillium wilt caused by the soil-borne fungus Verticillium dahliae.

In the reference 5 varieties crop Azalea, where this is mentioned in the description.

Unlike azaleas, which are susceptible to the pathogen, rhododendrons are characterized by high resistance to the causative agent. In susceptible species, the fungus colonizes the xylem conducting system, manifesting as leaf discoloration to red or yellow tones, premature wilting and abscission, as well as the formation of dark olive or gray streaks in the wood under the bark.

There is no data in the literature regarding specific races or pathotypes of the pathogen affecting rhododendrons, nor are there described specific resistance genes for this crop. The disease progression in susceptible plants can occur within a single season or extend over several years.
