Frost hardiness of rhododendron is an indicator of cultivar adaptability, measured by the threshold limit of sub-zero temperatures at which vegetative shoots and flower buds remain intact.

Frost hardiness is assessed by the plant's ability to withstand critical temperatures without damage, with flower buds considered the most vulnerable part of the rhododendron. Highly frost-hardy cultivars are those capable of withstanding -30°C to -40°C, whereas cultivars with a threshold of -15…-20°C require mandatory covering.

This trait determines cultivation technology, including the selection of wind-sheltered planting sites and measures to prevent winter desiccation of shoots. An indirect indicator of adaptation in evergreen species is leaf curling during frosty weather, which is a natural mechanism for reducing the surface area for moisture evaporation.
