Verticillium wilt — Solanum lycopersicum x Solanum pimpinellifolium

Solanum lycopersicum x Solanum pimpinellifolium

A fungal vascular disease caused by Verticillium dahliae and V. albo-atrum, where the resistance of hybrids is determined by the presence of the Ve locus, specifically the Ve1 gene.

In the reference 5 varieties crop Tomato, where this is mentioned in the description.

The disease affects interspecific hybrids of Solanum lycopersicum x Solanum pimpinellifolium, manifesting as unilateral yellowing and V-shaped curling of the lower leaves. As the infection progresses, the affected tissues become necrotic, and the plants wilt during the hottest time of the day. A characteristic diagnostic feature is the browning of vascular bundles in the lower part of the stem, which, unlike in Fusarium wilt, typically does not extend more than 30 cm from the soil surface.

The pathogen is represented by two main races: race 1 is controlled by the Ve1 gene, while race 2 strains are capable of overcoming this resistance. The Ve locus consists of two linked genes, Ve1 and Ve2, of which only the former provides protection against the pathogen. In breeding, resistance is indicated by the code V, and the wild species S. pimpinellifolium often serves as a source for the introgression of resistance genes to develop new hybrids.
