Verticillium wilt of eggplant

Solanum melongena L.

A fungal disease of the eggplant vascular system caused by Verticillium dahliae and V. albo-atrum, which leads to the blockage of water and nutrient transport.

In the reference 33 varieties crop Eggplant, where this is mentioned in the description.

The pathogens enter through the root system and infect the plant xylem. The primary symptom is interveinal necrosis of the lower leaves, often appearing as one-sided wilting of leaf blade sections. During the daytime, plants lose turgor, which may temporarily recover at night; however, as the disease progresses, yellowing, curling, and drying of the entire aerial part of the bush are observed.

Diagnosis of the disease is confirmed by characteristic browning of the conducting vessels when cross-sectioning the stem or petioles. In eggplant breeding, pathogen isolates are classified into defoliating and non-defoliating, as well as by virulence level. To evaluate the resistance of varieties and hybrids, the designations Va and Vd are used, along with molecular markers of the Ve1 and Ve2 genes, and a resistance level scale including HR (high) and IR (intermediate).
