Pepper Mosaic Viruses

A group of viral diseases of pepper, caused primarily by tobamoviruses, characterized by mosaic coloration, leaf deformation, stem necrosis, and fruit damage.

The pathogens causing the disease in pepper include tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), as well as tomato mosaic virus (ToMV) and pepper-specific pathogens: pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV), tobacco mild green mosaic virus (TMGMV), bell pepper mosaic virus (BPeMV), and paprika mild mottle virus (PaMMV). The PMMoV virus is classified into pathotypes P1.2 and P1.2.3, which determine its ability to overcome plant defense barriers.

External symptoms include chlorotic leaf mosaic, leaf curling, wrinkling and filiformity, as well as pitting and necrosis of fruits. Systemic infection leads to overall stunting and premature shedding of organs. Genetic resistance of pepper to tobamoviruses is determined by dominant alleles of the L locus (L+, L1–L4), although their efficacy may decrease when exposed to temperatures above 30°C.
