Viral Mosaic — Giant Pumpkin

Cucurbita maxima Duchesne

A complex of viral diseases of giant pumpkin caused primarily by Cucumber mosaic virus, Zucchini yellow mosaic virus, and Watermelon mosaic virus. The disease manifests as leaf deformation, plant stunting, and loss of fruit marketability, often occurring as mixed infections.

The main pathogens of viral mosaic in Cucurbita maxima are Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV), and Watermelon mosaic virus (WMV). Cases of infection with Bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV) and Zucchini lethal chlorosis virus (ZLCV) also occur. A characteristic feature of pathogenesis in this crop is the frequent occurrence of mixed infections, which significantly increases the severity of symptoms.

External signs of infection include chlorotic mottling and mosaic patterns on leaves, accompanied by their deformation, curling, or the acquisition of a fern-like shape. General growth inhibition and stunting are observed, as well as fruit distortion and spotting. Due to the lack of pronounced resistance to most viruses in the C. maxima species, breeding work is focused on using resistance donors from related species C. ecuadorensis and C. moschata.
