Tomato yellow leaf curl virus

A viral disease of tomatoes caused by TYLCV (genus Begomovirus), transmitted by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. It is characterized by chlorosis, leaf deformation, stunting, and mass flower drop.

The causative agent of the disease, tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV), belongs to the genus Begomovirus of the family Geminiviridae. The virus is transmitted exclusively by the tobacco or silverleaf whitefly Bemisia tabaci and is not spread mechanically through tools or contact between plants.
Key symptoms of infection include yellowing and deformation of young leaves, shortening of internodes leading to a bushy appearance of the plant, and stunted growth. With early infection, tomatoes may completely cease fruit formation, and mass flower drop is observed during the flowering period.
Genetic protection against TYLCV is based on the use of Ty resistance genes derived from wild tomato species such as Solanum pimpinellifolium or S. chilense. In breeding, markers Ty-1, Ty-2, Ty-3, and Ty-6 are identified, and varieties are classified by their level of resistance as HR (high) or IR (intermediate).
