Gossypium hirsutum L.
A complex cotton disease (CLCuD) caused by viruses of the genus Begomovirus in association with DNA-beta satellites and transmitted by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. It manifests as leaf curling, vein thickening, and enation formation, leading to stunting and yield reduction.

The disease is caused by a pathogenic complex comprising helper viruses and obligatory DNA-beta satellite molecules, which determine the specific symptoms. The most significant viral agents include Cotton leaf curl Multan virus, Kokhran virus, Alabad virus, Gezira virus, and the recombinant strain Burewala virus. In contrast, Cotton leaf crumple virus belongs to bipartite viruses with a different etiology.
Characteristic symptoms of infection in Gossypium hirsutum include curling of leaf blades, darkening and thickening of veins, and the formation of leafy outgrowths on the underside of leaves. The disease causes pronounced stunting of the plant, suppression of flowering, and a critical reduction in fiber yield.
The species G. hirsutum is characterized by high susceptibility to the pathogen, so breeding efforts are aimed at introgressing resistance genes from wild diploid species such as G. arboreum or G. armourianum. In modern studies, instead of classic resistance genes, the focus is on QTL mapping, particularly on chromosome D01, and the study of the expression of R-gene analogs.
